There’s every chance you have stumbled on a popular quote, “The person you should aspire to be better than is who you were yesterday”. Not sure if those are the exact words, but you understand the message.
In this present world, we tend to focus on lives displayed on the social media and tag them as the “best”,therefore striving to imitate everything “good” we see.
You have yourself, you know yourself. You know who you were yesterday, you know your dreams, goals and ambitions. Why then do you want to be like someone else? Focus on yourself and work towards achieving your goals.
Becoming a better version of yourself should be a priority, as it is everyone’s(at least, every sane being) . How then can this be achieved? Stay with me.
RECOGNISE THAT IT IS YOUR VISION
It is your vision, not someone else’s. So, don’t live up to what others want you to be. It is everyone’s goal to become a better and even the best version of themselves. Put in the efforts, no one will help you.
UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS NO SHORTCUT
Just like there is no shortcut to success. If there was, I don’t mind patiently waiting for a long time before I venture into a business as I’d become a millionaire the next day. Impossible.
A child is born, but he is dependent on the parents on a number of years before he or she becomes independent, this is the case even in a super wealthy family. There are steps to follow, things don’t just happen.
You might not even understand what’s happening, but just keep moving in the right direction you know. Do the right things. Say the right words. Sooner or later, you’d discover you are much better!
I’ll set my focus on just one of these opportunities, which in my opinion, is being misused by most people in this generation. It’s the INTERNET.
Gone are those days when vital information and knowledge was locked up in the minds of experts and books needed to be bought or checked in the libraries. Now, we have information at our beck and call. I receive emails daily on online courses one could take and I marvel at how much technology has taken over the world. Unfortunately, it is being mismanaged by most people. There are a lot of things to learn on the internet. If reading is your forte, there are millions, if not more, of blogs. And if visual and audio is yours, the YouTube is yours to explore.
Ignore the glamour you see everyday on the social media. They won’t tell you the bad things going on with them, it’s only the good stuff we see. It is hurting to compare yourself to all these. Get inspired and carry on. Don’t beat yourself up. If you set things right and work harder, you’ll be better off.
EMBRACE “FAILURE” & MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR FEARS.
No, I am not asking you to fail at every given opportunity. But you should understand that becoming a better version of yourself is not feasible if you are scared of failing. Although, no one wants to fail, ever, but “playing it safe” so as not to fail is not a great move. Funnily, that “failure” could even be the best thing that would ever happen to you. How? A form of failure is being sacked, right? What if it motivates you to become your own boss and then later on, you buy the company that sacked you? Ouch! Too big a dream? Well, if your dream doesn’t scare you, it isn’t big enough.
ENGAGE IN PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES
This cannot be overemphasized. When an issue such as becoming better is raised, productivity is sure to be on top of the list. Make conscious efforts everyday to sharpen your skills. As a writer, write everyday. Whatever your skill is, strife to become better each day. Learning a new skill isn’t too much of a task too, it might be of no use to you now, but later on, you’d be glad you picked it up.
RENDER HELP TO PEOPLE. MAKE THEM BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF THEMSELVES
This is therapeutic. For me, making people happy makes me happy even while there are a lot of things going on. I realise the little things that make other people happy and embrace gratitude.
MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE WHO BRING OUT THE BEST IN YOU
The kind of friends you keep determine your thoughts, decisions and actions. Do you have friends who, when you tell them your move, discourage you just because they don’t want to see you better than themselves? Please, move on. Surround yourself with people who want you happy and bring out the best in you.
Becoming a better version of yourself is a conscious effort. You should desire it and then work towards it.
What other way do you think one can become a better version of him or herself? Share your thoughts, please.
